Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is renowned for being a University of excellence and tradition. It is recognized for being the first University in Chile, third in South America, fourth in Latin America, fifth in Ibero-America, and 241 at world level. The University was inaugurated the 21st of June, 1888, stimulated by Pope Leo XIII´s thought that encouraged Catholics to create universities of academic excellence and values inspired in the Christian doctrine. It was founded with the mission to serve Chile in the creation of intellectual capital. Its first Rector was Monseigneur Joaquin Larrain Gandarillas.
